Aloha! A Rich History Eleele Shopping Center, located in Kauai's Eleele town along Kaumualii Highway, first opened for business in 1955 under the auspices of McBryde Sugar Plantation to serve Eleele's plantation camp and surrounding communities. At that time, Eleele Shopping Center's main stores were Eleele Super, Kauai's first cash and carry supermarket, and Ben Franklin, a variety store that carried dry goods, sundries, drugs, school supplies, and household items. Both were owned and operated by the Norito Kawakami family and, along with other stores, presented a convenient one-stop shopping experience for locals. Eleele Shopping Center Today Today, just as in the past, Eleele Shopping Center offers a variety of shopping opportunities for Kauai's west side families and visitors. Eleele Shopping Center remains situated in its original location, at the entrance of Port Allen Harbor and just before Hanapepe town, and provides patrons with a grocery store, hair salon, banks, eateries, retail establishments, healthcare facilities, and more.
